The historic Blue Ball Inn, also known as Littler’s Tavern, was originally built in 1747 by Quakers Mary and Samuel Littler, after the land was bequeathed by Brucetown’s founder, George Bruce. They ran the inn as a tavern throughout the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, with records indicating soldiers encamped on their land. George Washington himself is said to have been a regular at the tavern, on the way to his Winchester office. Mary Littler outlived her husband by many years, and by the time of the Revolutionary War, the Inn was known colloquially as “Widow Littler’s Tavern.” Unfortunately, census records indicate that she also outlived many of her 13 children. Seven of whom passed away before they reached adulthood. It appears that the property stayed in the Littler family for at least another generation, before coming into the possession of same-named Mary and Samuel Travers sometime after the Civil War. During this period, it transitioned to a farm and family home. They had several children and death certificates indicate that Samuel died of liver nephritis in the home in the early 1900s. He was buried at nearby Mt. Hebron cemetery. Mary Travers outlived her husband by many decades before she passed in the mid-twentieth century, bequeathing the home and land to her granddaughter, Mary Frances. Mary Frances lived in the adjoining, newer home until the end of her life in the early 2000s. During this period, the Inn was inhabited by a number of tenants as it slowly fell into disrepair. By the time it came to be in current owner Joseph Durbin’s possession, a vast majority of rooms and windows were boarded up and the house all but uninhabitable. Thanks to his hard work and dedication over the past year, the Inn is beginning to return to its former glory, but still has a long way to go.
During the renovations, strange activity including disembodied voices, cold spots, objects appearing out of nowhere, bites/scratches, and even full-bodied apparitions alerted Joseph to the fact that some of the house’s former residents may have never left. Professional investigators, mediums, and casual visitors alike have reportedly felt the presence of multiple male, female, and child spirits—with varying degrees of friendliness. Renovation, research, and investigations continue to uncover the history and haunting of this historic Virginia property.
